Myoko receives some of Japan’s heaviest snowfalls. In winter there can be over 3 m of snow on the ground, sometimes with 1.5 m of snow falling overnight. The ungroomed runs at Myoko’s ski resorts offer skiers and snowboarders the opportunity to revel in some of Japan’s finest deep powder snow. For experienced skiers, some ski resorts open their off-piste areas to the public, giving you access to thrilling forest runs and natural terrain.

Myoko Suginohara Ski Resort

This ski resort is home to two powder courses each about 800 m long. These two courses, the "Super Giant Course" and the "Super Mogul Course,” are both located at the top of the piste with loads of quality powder snow. The Super Giant Course is 38 degrees and extremely steep. The sensation of tearing through snow so deep it almost engulfs you is impossible to describe - you have to feel it to believe it.

Ikenotaira Onsen Ski Resort

Ikenotaira is a hot spring ski resort with superb forest runs suited to beginners through to intermediate skiers. Tree Run Course 1 is fairly gentle, perfect for your first forest run. Tree Run Course 2 is a bit steeper and provides a more exhilarating run through the trees. Also at the resort is the 1,200 m-long Gasteiner Course with its combination of groomed surfaces and powder snow.

Akakura Kanko Resort

The most popular powder spot at Akakura Kanko Resort is the Hotel A Course, which starts from the top of the piste. After an overnight snowfall, board the hotel's #5 high-speed quad chairlift and head straight for this course first thing in the morning and make fresh tracks in the powder.

The Champion A Course on the champion piste is a steep, ungroomed area for advanced skiers only. A dump of fresh powder turns it into a technical course full of natural moguls.

Akakura Onsen Ski Area

Akakura Onsen Ski Area boasts a broad piste with abundant ungroomed runs. The Mogul Challenge Course at the deepest end of the piste is a famous course holding a stretch of one of the piste’s steepest slopes. After a snowfall the entire course will covered in lots of natural snow, offering you a dream powder run. If you’re a beginner, head for the gentle, ungroomed "Downhill Central Course.” There’s plenty of room for you to practice your wide turns and enjoy the powder run at your own pace.

Seki Onsen Ski Area

This is a mostly ungroomed ski area that's irresistible to powder lovers. There's a "Backcountry Powder Guide Course" and other routes to enjoy runs through the trees and varied natural terrain. They end at the bottom of the piste, so you can get back on the lift to continue your backcountry skiing adventure.

The piste also has safety measures in place. For instance, if you ask the staff they will tell you the condition of the piste. Remember that when you ski off-piste, you do so at your own risk.

You'll discover loads of quality snow on the north slope, in great condition even later in the season.

Lotte Arai Resort

Lotte Arai Resort is a powder paradise with 12 off-piste areas.

The greatest spot is none other than the avalanche-controlled zone, where you can take on the natural terrain. This zone is open only when conditions are good, but it possesses a great sprawl of natural terrain, including open areas covered in fresh snow, tree runs and a gully.

If you feel like a hike up Mt. Ogenashi from the top of the lift, there's the chance to experience a powder run down the entire mountain.
