Blessed with plenty of onsens and lots of snow, Yuzawa is home to many ski resorts popular with lots of tourists. There are many large Japanese and western style hotels around the Joetsu Shinkansen's Echigo Yuzawa station, plus onsen centers for one-time visitors. The onsen town features the beautiful atmosphere of a snowy town, where you can enjoy a stroll stopping at restaurants and souvenir shops.

Enjoy a foot bath in the onsen town

With foot bath, you can have a pseudo-onsen experience while strolling through the onsen town. You'll find the foot baths in parks and in front of hotels, and you can enjoy them fully clothed - without your shoes and socks, of course! Just dip your feet in the warm water and relax while your whole body warms up. Photographed is the foot bath of the hotel Hatago Isen, which is in front of the west exit square of Echigo Yuzawa station. You can enjoy the footbath even if you're not a hotel guest.
Echigo no Oyado Inamoto, a hotel about two minutes' walk from the west exit of Echigo Yuzawa station, has a foot bath right in front of the entrance. The tub features green tuff, a natural rock that generates negative ions.
The onsen town also has a hand bath. Both foot and hand baths use hot spring water. This kind of townscape is only possible because Yuzawa has many hot springs.

Vintage "shooting game" stores

The onsen town has a few shooting game stores, where visitors shoot targets with cork bullets. Depending on the score, you could win gifts like toys and stuffed animals. Shooting arenas used to be popular in onsen towns but nowadays they are rarely found. But in the onsen town of Yuzawa, you can still enjoy the game just as it was in the early days.
This is a simple game where you fire cork bullets with air pressure at targets, but it's full of retro atmosphere.

Famous bamboo dumplings

Bamboo dumplings are a famous Niigata product. Mugwort dumplings with sweet red bean paste inside are wrapped in bamboo leaves and steamed. The ancient regional delicacy can be bought at any souvenir store, but if you buy them directly from special bamboo dumpling stores in the onsen town, you can taste them freshly made. One of the stores is Meibutsudo Tonoya, on the main street at the west exit of Echigo Yuzawa station.
Freshly made bamboo dumplings are very soft, with a delightful, traditional and simple taste.

Street-food hopping in the onsen town

At Mirakuan, you can taste freshly baked mochi dumplings at the store's entrance. Mochi dumplings, white and plain, or with mugwort and purple potato, are slowly baked over charcoal and served fresh. The store also sells regional confectioneries from Yuzawa.
